I’m trying to renew my driver’s license in North Carolina, but my old license is from Illinois. What documents do I need? Can I just walk in, or do I need an appointment? Earliest appointments are months away. Anyone been through this?
Yeah, I went through this when I moved to NC. You’ll need proof of identity, like your old license or a passport. Don’t forget proof of Social Security too, like your Social Security card or a W-2.

What counts as proof of Social Security? I don’t have my card anymore.
@Shan
A W-2 or 1099 form with your Social Security number works too. Check if you have any of those lying around!
You also need two documents showing you live in NC, like a utility bill or lease. Don’t forget those!

Do bank statements count for that?

Yep, bank statements work too. Just make sure they have your current NC address.
If your Illinois license is still valid, they might make you take a driver’s test since it’s from another state.

Ugh, seriously? That’s a pain. Do they just make you redo everything?
@Finley
Not the whole process, just a test to make sure you know the basics. It’s pretty straightforward.
You can walk in, but the wait might be long. Appointments are quicker if you can wait till January.

Good to know. How early should I get there if I’m walking in?

As early as possible, like before they open. The lines can get crazy.
FYI, there’s a vision test and a $5 per year renewal fee too. Don’t forget your glasses if you wear them!

Wait, what’s the renewal fee for?

It’s just the DMV fee for how many years your license is valid. Pretty standard.
