What is macy's shoplifting policy?

Can someone explain what happens if you get caught shoplifting at Macy’s?

Just don’t do it.

Why not try applying for a job there instead?

Maybe the person who posted this has been trying for years to find a job and hasn’t succeeded. They might feel desperate for some clothes to wear to interviews.

When I worked there, the policy was strict. If you crossed the store boundary with unpaid items, they would stop you and recover the items, sometimes even getting physical. I remember being called to assist security with female shoplifters until the police arrived.

That’s surprising. In many places, touching shoplifters risks lawsuits, and police often ignore smaller thefts unless it’s a big haul.

I worked in Texas, not somewhere like California or New York where laws are more lenient about shoplifting. Policies might’ve changed since then, though.

I paid a fine and got banned from all Macy’s stores in the USA. Is there any way to get the ban lifted or reduced?

I only worked in sales and didn’t deal much with bans. Honestly, why are you so eager to go back? There are plenty of other stores out there.

@Vail
Do they add names to a national database? They told me my information wouldn’t be shared, but I’m not sure.

They banned me from all Macy’s stores in the USA permanently. Can this ban be lifted somehow?

I wouldn’t risk it. The store employees know your face, and larger retailers have advanced security measures now. It’s better to shop elsewhere and avoid any future trouble.

@Vail
Honestly, why would you even want to go back? Just go somewhere else.

Some stores might have different policies or staff turnover, but I still wouldn’t chance it. Find somewhere new.

My family shops there all the time, and I feel ashamed making excuses not to go with them. I just want to clear my name.

@Rin
Maybe start by being honest with your family? That might ease the stress.

I swear I’ll never do this again.

A ban usually applies to any stores owned by Macy’s now or in the future. If you’re caught trespassing again, you’ll likely face legal consequences.

Just shop at JCPenney instead.

But my family always goes to Macy’s.
