Hi all… I’ve got a legal question here. If a private business gets hacked by some outside group and they start spreading confidential info to hurt the business, what kind of charges or actions could the business take? Any help would be awesome!
Sounds serious. They could probably go to the FBI if it involves hacking and confidential data theft. It might fall under cybercrimes?

Totally, the FBI would be a good start. Also, any illegally obtained footage might be seen as theft of information.

Yeah, cybercrimes are usually federal, right? So FBI would be the best way to go.
I think they can also sue for damages. Like, if they know who did it, the business could file for any losses they’ve had.

Good point! So, the business could actually get back money for lost business?

Yep, they just need to prove how much they lost because of the leaks.
Would hidden cameras count as theft too? Like if they got info by secretly recording things?

Definitely could. Hidden cameras are super illegal if the employees didn’t know.

And if they used those recordings to get clients to leave, it’s probably illegal too. That’s serious competition interference.
This sounds like a big mess! Has the business lawyer said anything about how to handle it?

Not sure yet, but I think they’re looking into suing the people who did this.

Good idea. The lawyer should be able to guide them on both criminal and civil steps to take.
If anyone knows, can the business get legal fees covered too if they win?

Yeah, in some cases, they can ask for legal fees to be covered in the lawsuit if they can prove damages.

Exactly. Especially if it’s a clear case of someone interfering with the business for competitive reasons.
