I’ve been renting a townhouse from my brother for 9 years and 3 months. Now, the master association is suing him to evict us because apparently he isn’t supposed to rent his townhouse to me. The court has set a hearing for 10/31/24, and I’m not sure where to start. Do I need to get my own lawyer for this? Anyone been through something similar?
Wow, that sounds really stressful! I’d suggest looking into the HOA’s rules first. Your brother should have a copy of the bylaws. It could help understand why they’re doing this.
I was in a similar situation, and I had to get my own lawyer. My landlord’s lawyer wasn’t enough because they were looking out for him, not me. A lawyer helped me figure out what rights I had as a tenant.
You definitely should consider getting your own legal advice. Even if your brother is the one being sued, the outcome could affect you directly, especially since you’ve been there so long.
Thanks for all the advice, guys. I’m kind of freaking out over here, but I’ll take your suggestions. Fingers crossed it works out.
It’s scary, I know. But if they win the lawsuit, eviction is still a process. You’ll get time to move out. Just make sure you know your rights and take it step by step.
