What should I do if my landlord took things from my house after eviction?

So, I was evicted and my landlord made me disconnect the cameras and wait until the last day of the 30 days to go in and get my stuff. Now, things are missing, and I know they were in the house without me during those 30 days. I’m certain they took things because the house was locked with a constable present, so no one was supposed to go in. Is this legal? I’m really frustrated and just want to know what my next steps should be.

That’s messed up. No way they should’ve gone in without you. Have you thought about calling the police? They might be able to help you out with this.

Yeah, definitely call the cops. It sounds like they might have taken your stuff, and that’s theft. Even if you don’t have receipts, you can still report it.

@Morgan
I’m so mad about it. I have video of their vehicles, and neighbors saw them going in too, but I don’t know if that’ll help without receipts for my stuff. What do you think?

That’s definitely shady. If you can’t get the cops involved, you could look into suing for the replacement value of your stuff. Even if you don’t have receipts, you might still have a case.

Yeah, that’s what I’m thinking. I don’t even know where to start with the legal stuff though. I’ve got some family heirlooms missing, like my mom’s jewelry. Ugh.

I would definitely talk to a lawyer if you can. If they’re involved, they might be able to get the ball rolling for you and help you figure out what’s best to do next.

Yeah, I agree with the others. Even without receipts, you can probably prove the value of your stuff through witnesses, like your neighbors or anyone who saw the items. It’s worth a shot!

That’s true! I didn’t think about asking the neighbors to help with that. I’ll definitely do that. Thanks!

Sorry you’re going through this. It sounds like they totally crossed the line. Try talking to a lawyer first, and if that doesn’t get you anywhere, consider taking them to small claims court or something.
