Hey everyone… I’m in a bit of a bind here. My high school senior’s school won’t tell us his class rank for college applications. I thought they had to share this info? Anyone know what rights I have to get it in New Jersey?
That’s frustrating! I think schools can be weird about releasing class ranks. Have you asked them directly?

Yeah, same here! I had to push my school for mine. They finally gave it up but only after I threatened to make it a formal request.
I heard there’s a law called FERPA that lets parents access student records. You might want to mention that when you talk to the school.

What does FERPA cover, exactly? IDK much about it.
@River
It’s about student privacy rights. Basically, schools have to let you see certain records. So it should help with your situation!
I think you can make a public records request if they won’t just give it up. Just ask how to do it!

So, would that mean they have to legally give it to you?

Yeah, if they have the rank documented, they can’t refuse it!
Good luck with your meeting! Make sure to ask about their policies and how they came to that decision. Could help you push for the info!
I’ve heard some schools don’t even keep class ranks anymore. I hope that’s not the case for you. Keep us updated!
