Why can’t I get the food allowance program if I’m retired military?

Hey all, I’m retired military and over 65, but they’re saying I can’t get into the food allowance program because I’m on TRICARE. Just wondering if anyone else has run into this or has any advice?

Yeah, I think TRICARE has different rules that can impact certain benefits. You might not get the food allowance, but TRICARE coverage is usually more extensive than Medicare Advantage plans. Maybe check if your Medicare Advantage has something similar?

@Maddox
What’s Medicare Advantage? I don’t think I’m familiar with it.

@Maddox
Oh, it’s a type of Medicare plan that sometimes includes extra benefits, like food allowances. TRICARE doesn’t align with all of those extras, though.

I’d say check with your local VA office—they might have some additional support or programs you’re eligible for.

Good idea, I’ll reach out and see what they say. Thanks for the tip!

Have you tried applying for SNAP? Sometimes if you qualify for that, it can be a good supplement.

What’s SNAP? Is it different from the food allowance?

Yeah, SNAP is a state-based program for food assistance, also called Food Stamps. You can apply directly through your state.

The food allowance usually comes with certain Medicare plans, not TRICARE. You could ask your Medicare provider if there’s anything they can offer for food benefits.

Good call—I’ll reach out to them and see what options they might have. Appreciate it!

TRICARE is pretty great for coverage overall, even if they don’t offer the food benefit. At least you’re covered in other areas!

True, that’s a plus. Guess I’ll look into other options for the food part.
