Why is the school board offering my son an alternative school instead of regular high school?

I reached out to the school board like I was advised, but they want to enroll my son in an alternative school. They said he wouldn’t be able to take the AP classes he wants, and the education won’t be the same as a regular high school. My son was bullied by not just other students but also by a teacher, and even told to kill himself. His life was threatened, and now they want him to sacrifice his education. He’s mentally disabled, a 504 student, and has missed over 15 days of school. Why is this happening?

That sounds awful! I can’t believe they’re offering an alternative school instead of addressing the real issue. Have you considered talking to a lawyer about this? They might be able to help push back against the school’s decision.

@Tan
I’m with you, DEF. This isn’t right. A lawyer might be the best route, but yeah, that’s going to cost a lot… Have you looked into pro bono options?

Yeah, I’ve looked into it, but the lawyer’s fees are steep. $350 an hour just to fight for my son’s safety and education. It’s really overwhelming. :disappointed:

This situation sounds really frustrating. I would think the school should be supporting your son, not pushing him away. Have you tried talking to anyone higher up in the school board?

I’ve tried, but it feels like no one’s listening. They just keep pushing this alternative school idea. It’s like they’re not hearing my concerns about my son’s education and safety.

I know it’s tough, but I would definitely suggest hiring an attorney if you can. They might be able to help force the school to give him the support he deserves. It’s really not fair what’s happening.

Yeah, I’m thinking of hiring an attorney, but I’m just so frustrated with the cost. $350 an hour feels like a lot just for basic safety rights. :pensive:

Have you tried any advocacy groups or organizations? They sometimes offer free legal help for cases like this. You might be able to get some support without paying those high fees.

I’ve been looking into that, but haven’t found anything so far. It’s hard to figure out where to even start.

I’m really sorry you’re dealing with this. The whole situation sounds terrible. If there’s any way I can help or point you in the right direction, let me know. Stay strong for your son!

Thank you, PQR. I just want him to be safe and to have the same chances as everyone else. This whole thing is really taking a toll.
