I was assaulted by my neighbor about 14 months ago in my apartment building, just outside my apartment door. I later found out he had assaulted an 80-year-old woman in the building garden, but he was allowed to stay in the building. He could’ve hurt someone else! I spoke about it in a tenant meeting and a few women approached me afterward saying he grabbed their butt or made awful comments about Black women. One of them was an 18-year-old Black woman. The Resident Services Coordinator talked to his daughters and moved him to another senior building, but not long after, that same coordinator was fired. I’ve been struggling with panic attacks, isolation, anxiety, anger, relationship issues, binge eating, and depression. I already had mental health issues before, and I feel like I’ve had a major setback. Should I consider suing the landlord?
Wow, that sounds like a horrible situation. I’m really sorry you had to go through that. It’s tough, but I think you have a case. If the landlord didn’t take enough action after you reported it, they might be at fault.
@Remi
Yeah, that’s messed up. If the landlord knew about this and didn’t do enough, they could be held responsible for letting that guy stay in the building. Have you spoken to a lawyer about it yet?

I haven’t talked to a lawyer yet. I was just wondering if it’s even worth it or if I’ll get the same treatment from them. It’s been so long since it happened…
I’m so sorry you’ve been going through all this. It seems like the landlord didn’t take it seriously enough. They should’ve made sure the guy was removed faster, especially with what you reported. Maybe you should speak to a lawyer who specializes in landlord-tenant cases.
@Rey
I’m really hesitant because of the time that has passed. Do you think I still have a chance to do something about it?

It’s definitely still worth looking into. Laws can be tricky with time limits, but a lawyer will know how to handle it. You’ve been dealing with a lot, so don’t hesitate to reach out.
That’s really upsetting. I think you should consider talking to a lawyer. They can help you figure out if the landlord could be held responsible for what happened and the impact on your mental health. If you already reported the incident and nothing changed, there might be a case there.
@BookwormBard
Thanks for the advice. I’ll definitely look into it. It just feels like so much to deal with right now.
I think you could have a case if the landlord didn’t act on your report quickly enough or if they failed to protect you from harm. Maybe you could also bring up how your mental health was affected by everything. It’s worth talking to someone about it.
It sounds like a nightmare. You deserve better protection as a tenant. I’d say speak to a lawyer. They’ll be able to guide you and tell you whether it’s still possible to take legal action. Don’t let this slide.
@Emerson
I appreciate that. I just want to make sure I’m not wasting time or energy. It’s been so long…
